What is Kinesiology?

Kinesiologists are human movement specialists who use science and research to offer movement as medicine, to any person with a health or fitness goal who wants a hands-on, personalized approach. In simpler terms, we can say that kinesiology is also defined as human kinetics, or the scientific study of human movement. The term comes from the Greek word kinesis, which means "to move."

Kinesiology is the application of the dynamics of human movement and its components (anatomical, physiological, neurological, biochemical, biomechanical, neuromotor, psychological) in interaction with the environment. Kinesiologists require a 4 year bachelor’s or master’s degree and they apply exercise and movement science to promote health and well-being; prevent, manage, and rehabilitate injuries; treat illness and chronic disease; restore function; and optimize human performance in the workplace, clinical settings, sport, and fitness.

Aside from its enormous value as a preventative as well as a therapeutic method for rehabilitating injuries, kinesiology along with exercise physiology is the primary professional employed to help athletes improve sports performance and biomechanics. By programming specific exercises at different times during the competitive year, kinesiologists can improve many facets of sports performance including: balance, joint stability, speed, quickness, agility, endurance, strength, power, acceleration and coordination.
